When Large Breasts Become a Medical Concern
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size proportionate to the body. While breast augmentation increases size, breast reduction solves the physical and functional problems caused by overly large, heavy breasts.
Symptoms That Indicate You May Need a Breast Reduction
- Chronic neck, shoulder, and upper back pain
- Bra strap grooves that leave permanent indentations
- Skin irritation or rashes in the crease beneath the breasts
- Difficulty exercising or participating in physical activities
- Numbness or tingling in the hands due to nerve compression
- Poor posture caused by the weight of the breasts
- Self-consciousness that limits clothing choices and social confidence
The Surgical Procedure
Dr. Saba uses techniques selected based on the amount of tissue to be removed and the desired final breast shape. Common approaches include:
- Vertical (lollipop) technique: Best for moderate reductions. Leaves a scar around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease
- Anchor (inverted T) technique: For larger reductions. Adds a scar along the breast crease for maximum tissue removal and reshaping
During surgery, Dr. Saba removes excess tissue and fat, reshapes the remaining breast tissue, reduces the areola if enlarged, and repositions the nipple-areola complex to a higher, more youthful position. The nipple remains attached to its blood supply throughout, preserving sensation in most cases.
Recovery Timeline
Most patients describe the recovery as surprisingly manageable — many report immediate relief from back and shoulder pain, even while still swollen from surgery. Return to desk work takes one to two weeks. Physical exercise resumes at four to six weeks. Scars mature over 12 to 18 months.
Results
Breast reduction produces one of the highest patient satisfaction rates of any cosmetic procedure. The result is lighter, lifted breasts that are proportionate to the body — improving posture, comfort, clothing options, and overall quality of life.
