Post Weight Loss Surgery Dubai – Tummy Tuck, Vaser & J-Plasma

Achieving major weight loss, whether through bariatric surgery, dieting or both, is a real accomplishment. Many patients are then left with loose skin and pockets of stubborn fat that exercise does not change. Dr Saba Al Marush, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Dubai, offers a staged approach to body contouring after weight loss: abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) with or without Vaser liposuction, Vaser of other areas, and J-Plasma for mild skin laxity. She does not perform body lifts, arm lifts, thigh lifts, breast lifts or breast reductions, and she will tell you honestly if one of those is what you need.

Understanding Skin Changes After Weight Loss

After a large weight loss, skin that was stretched may not have the elasticity to shrink back to the body’s new contour. Loose skin can remain on the abdomen, arms, thighs, breasts, back and buttocks, and the amount varies greatly from person to person.

Loose skin can be more than a cosmetic concern. It can cause:

  • Chronic skin irritation, rashes, and fungal infections in skin creases
  • Difficulty with hygiene and personal care
  • Limitation in physical activity and exercise
  • Persistent body image dissatisfaction despite successful weight loss
  • Emotional distress and social withdrawal

Some of these concerns can be improved with the options Dr Saba offers; others, such as heavy hanging skin on the arms, thighs or all around the body, need lift operations that she does not perform.

What Dr Saba Offers After Weight Loss

The right combination depends on your anatomy, the areas that concern you and your overall health. Dr Saba explains at consultation what each option can and cannot do for you.

What Dr Saba Does Not Perform

Dr Saba does not perform a body lift (circumferential lipectomy), arm lift, thigh lift, breast lift or breast reduction. If your examination shows that one of these is what you need, she will say so plainly so that you can see a surgeon who performs it.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck removes loose skin from the lower abdomen, repairs separated abdominal muscles where needed and creates a flatter midsection. It can be combined with Vaser of the waist and flanks. Desk work is usually possible after 2–3 weeks, and the compression garment is worn for 3 months.

Vaser Liposuction

Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound energy to remove stubborn fat through small entry points. After weight loss it can refine the waist, flanks, back, hips, thighs, knees and arms. It does not remove loose skin.

J-Plasma for Mild Laxity

J-Plasma skin tightening is a helium-plasma energy treatment applied beneath the skin, often with Vaser, to help mildly lax skin contract. It can improve mild looseness; it is not a substitute for skin removal when the skin hangs in folds.

Breast Augmentation and Implant Procedures

After major weight loss the breasts often lose volume. Where the breast still sits reasonably well, Preservé breast augmentation or fat transfer to the breast may restore fullness; Dr Saba also performs implant exchange and removal. These do not correct true sagging, and she does not perform breast lifts or reductions. For male patients, gynaecomastia correction may be appropriate.

The Staging Approach: Which Procedures First?

Because patients often have several areas of concern, Dr Saba plans treatment in stages over several months rather than in one long operation. Staging keeps each operation to a safe length and allows each area to heal before the next step.

A typical staged plan may look like this:

  • Stage 1 (most common first step): Tummy tuck, with or without Vaser of the waist and flanks, addressing the trunk, which has the greatest effect on overall shape and comfort.
  • Stage 2 (some months later): Vaser of the arms, back or thighs, with J-Plasma where the skin is mildly lax.
  • Stage 3 (if needed): Breast augmentation or other refinements, such as scar revision.

Some patients can combine two smaller procedures in one stage if their health allows. Dr Saba carefully evaluates which combinations are safe and appropriate for each individual.

Timing: When to Have Surgery After Weight Loss

Timing matters. Before surgery Dr Saba considers:

  • Stable weight: Your weight should have been stable for several months before body contouring. Continued weight loss or regain after surgery can affect the result.
  • Current weight: Dr Saba assesses whether your current weight makes surgery safe and likely to give a good result, and may advise continuing your weight-loss plan first.
  • Nutritional status: After bariatric surgery, deficiencies in protein, iron, vitamin D and B vitamins are common and can impair wound healing. Pre-operative assessment and correction are essential.
  • Emotional readiness: Body contouring after weight loss is a significant undertaking. Be prepared for the recovery period, the scars and the reality that results are an improvement, not perfection.

Realistic Expectations

A staged plan can make a real difference to comfort and shape after weight loss. It is important to have realistic expectations:

  • Scars: A tummy tuck leaves a permanent scar, usually placed low on the abdomen. Vaser and J-Plasma use small entry points. Scars fade over time but do not disappear.
  • Skin quality: Skin that has been significantly stretched may not regain the same tone, texture or elasticity.
  • Limits: Vaser and J-Plasma do not remove heavy hanging skin from the arms, thighs, back or buttocks; that needs lift operations Dr Saba does not perform.
  • Multiple procedures: A complete plan often involves more than one operation, spaced over several months.

The Emotional Journey

The emotional side of surgery after weight loss is significant. Many patients experience a mix of emotions:

  • Relief and excitement at finally addressing the excess skin that has been a source of distress
  • Anxiety about surgery, anaesthesia, and recovery
  • Frustration during recovery, particularly when several staged procedures are involved
  • Adjustment to a new body image, which can be emotionally challenging even when the changes are positive

Dr Saba Al Marush and her team aim to support you throughout the process, recognising that the emotional journey matters as much as the surgical one. Patients are encouraged to discuss their feelings openly and to seek psychological support if needed.

Insurance

Body contouring after weight loss is usually considered cosmetic. Some policies may consider partial cover when loose skin causes documented medical problems, but coverage varies between insurers and plans.

Contact your insurance provider directly to check your coverage and any pre-authorisation requirements before booking. Dr Saba’s team can provide medical documentation where appropriate.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dr Saba perform body lifts, arm lifts or thigh lifts?

No. Dr Saba does not perform body lifts, arm lifts, thigh lifts, breast lifts or breast reductions. After weight loss she offers a tummy tuck with or without Vaser, Vaser of other areas and J-Plasma, planned in stages where needed.

Can all loose skin be treated in one surgery?

Usually not. A staged approach, with operations spaced months apart, is safer. Some loose skin, such as heavy hanging skin on the arms or thighs, needs lift operations that Dr Saba does not perform.

What is recovery like after a tummy tuck?

Desk work is usually possible after 2–3 weeks, and the compression garment is worn for 3 months. Dr Saba advises when you can return to exercise and when the next stage can be planned.

Will the results be permanent?

Results are long-lasting provided you keep a stable weight. Significant weight gain can stretch the tissues again, and normal ageing continues to cause gradual change.

Is surgery after weight loss riskier?

All surgery carries risks. After major weight loss, nutritional status and skin quality can increase some risks, which is why pre-operative assessment and staging matter. Dr Saba explains the risks that apply to you at consultation.

Can J-Plasma replace skin removal?

No. J-Plasma can help mildly lax skin contract, but it does not remove skin. Heavy hanging skin needs surgical removal.

How soon after bariatric surgery can I have body contouring?

Only once your weight has stabilised, any nutritional deficiencies have been corrected and you have recovered from the bariatric procedure. Dr Saba advises on timing at consultation.

Will I need to stay in hospital after surgery?

It depends on the procedure and your health. Dr Saba explains the plan for your stay at Dr Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital, Dubai Healthcare City, at consultation.

Plan Your Body Contouring After Weight Loss

If you have achieved significant weight loss and want to know what can be done about loose skin and stubborn fat, Dr Saba Al Marush will assess you honestly and explain whether a staged plan with a tummy tuck, Vaser and J-Plasma suits your goals, or whether a lift operation, which she does not perform, is what you need.
